Steps involved in root canal treatment – Lakeshore Dentistry
Getting a root canal is not as scary as many perceive it to be. The dentists at Lakeshore Dentistry carry out safe and pain-free root canal therapy Mississauga ensuring their patients are comfortable from start till finish.
Below-mentioned is a few steps involved in a root canal procedure
Step 1
The dentist will administer local anaesthesia to numb the tooth that needs to be treated, including the surrounding tissues. If the pulp in a tooth is inflamed, it can take a while for the area to get numb. Until then the dentist will not begin the procedure.
Step 2
A thin sheet of vinyl or rubber is placed over the infected or decaying area and the adjacent teeth. The tooth that needs to be treated protrudes through a hole being punched in the dam, making it go far apart from the rest of the mouth. This allows the root canal procedure to be undertaken in a safe environment free from getting contaminated by any bacteria.
Step 3
The dentist will create a small access hole from behind the tooth or through the biting surface giving access to the pulp chamber and root canal for treatment.
Step 4
The deal pulp tissue is taken off from the tooth with instruments that are specially designed to clean out the root canal and pulp chamber. This process is not painful at all, as the area is numb. The tooth will not feel any pain once the pulp is and dead nerves are removed.
Step 5
The dentist will disinfect the treated area with antibacterial solutions.
Step 6
The dentist shapes the canals with tiny instruments that are flexible allowing them to receive root canal fillings and sealers. Before sealing them, the dentist will clean and wash them again to remove any remaining root canal debris.
Step 7
The dentist will select root canal fillings bespoke to the patient to fit exactly into the freshly prepared canals. It is usually a rubber-like material that is applied to fill the space. It is compressed against the walls of the root canals to seal them, along with an adhesive. It is vital to seal the root canals to prevent them from becoming reinfected with bacteria.
Step 8
The dentist will place a temporary filling to seal the hole till it heals completely. Once the patient’s tooth has completely healed, they will place a strong post in one of the canals inside the tooth to retain it.
Step 9
The dentist will prescribe an antibiotic to prevent any further infection. There are very minimal aftereffects, which may last for a couple of days to about a week. It is completely normal to experience some discomfort that may last for a few days to a week, but it is nothing that can be managed by an over-the-counter prescription.
